West Branch of the Penobscot River (daily) Maine's mile high Mount Katahdin provides the backdrop for the Maine's most challenging stretch of class V whitewater rafting. In the first two miles the Penobscot River rushes through the spectacular Ripogenus Gorge. On this section whitewater rapids like "Exterminator", and "Fist of God" live up to their names. The "Crib Works" rapid is solid class V whitewater. The next 14 miles of the Penobscot River alternates between class III + and IV whitewater. Highlights of the day include the 12 foot high water fall rapid "Nesowadnehunk Falls" , and a sizzling steak and chicken barbeque.
